Dossier: Barbar

zıvana: the pin that joins two parts — zıvanadan çıkmak, “to come off the pin”: to lose one's temper, to go off the rails — Wiktionary (after TDK · Nişanyan)

BARBAR

the name for the one whose speech is not understood

To Greek ears a language they did not understand sounded like “bar-bar”; whoever spoke that way was a barbarian. The word is a rhythm first and a verdict second. Issue zero takes the rhythm back: voices from every geography and every language that were once called wild, mad, crazy, out of bounds — the original on the left, the translation joined to it, the source in view. Sound poems with their sounding, drawings with their ink, an archive record with its slip.

22–29 November 1947, French radio studios · 41:28

Zıvana does not copy the recording; it files the record and points to the door. Made for radio by a man then confined to an asylum and banned before it aired, this work is the question of issue zero: who is the madman, who the barbarian, whom does censorship serve? The recording can be heard at the INA.
